Submit Your for the Centennial Time Capsule
MacWorld magazine, electric car manuals, a year book, USB drive, the Trail Blazers program from the playoffs, a newspaper article about a political event—what items, ideas, or milestones best mirror the year 2010?
Lake Oswego Centennial planners are asking citizens, students and community organizations to think about what makes this year significant for them. One hundred years from now, when the 2 foot by 2 foot time capsule is exhumed, what do you want Lake Oswegans to know about life in 2010?
“We need community help to make sure we are getting the best-of-the-best of our Lake Oswego today.
Those selections will then become a part of history as they embark the capsule for the next 100 years.”
— Kathy Kern-Schilling, Special Events Coordinator,
City of Lake Oswego
Keep in mind that the capsule will be unearthed and opened a century from now. Planners suggest items that withstand the test of time. While computers, iPods and iPhones do represent the world we know today, they simply won’t function after 100 years in a vault.
Beyond that, the sky’s the limit--from pop culture toys or trinkets, technological gadgets, newspaper articles, high school yearbooks, community newsletters, magazines, anything that depicts a slice of life from 2010. All ideas submitted by September 30 will be considered for inclusion.

“The Lake Oswego Centennial has been planned in order to honor the past, celebrate the present, and imagine the future of this great city. There’s no better way to honor our own place in history than to preserve it with a time capsule full of creative, inspiring and exemplary items of life in 2010,” says Kathy Kern-Schilling, Special Events Coordinator, City of Lake Oswego. “We need community help to make sure we are getting the best-of-the-best of our Lake Oswego today. Those selections will then become a part of history as they embark the capsule for the next 100 years.”
Promising to be a grand finale of birthday fun, the Centennial Celebration commemorating the burial of the historic capsule takes place on October 10, 2010 at the Millennium Plaza Park, 1 – 3 p.m. Guests will enjoy special commemorative cake, complimentary soup from Manzana’s, entertainment and refreshment.
The Presenting Sponsors of the Lake Oswego Centennial are Prudential Northwest Properties and Lake Oswego Review; the Time Capsule Ceremony is sponsored by Allied Waste.
