Celebrating 100 Years

7,000 people help Lake Oswego celebrate its 100th birthday

By Cliff Newell, The Lake Oswego Review, Jul 22, 2010

When a city puts so much effort into a party that celebrates a century, a lot of wishing, hoping and worrying goes on. Prayer, too.

But the Lake Oswego Centennial Festival met all expectations as an estimated 7,000 people flocked to Luscher Farm on Saturday. From the happy horse wagon ride to the farm to the big screen showing of “The Blind Side” after sundown, everybody had a good time.

Afterward, directors of the event had the sweet glow of success.

“I was thrilled with the weather, the turnout and that the community enjoyed being at the farm so much,” said Cindy Thompson, director of the Centennial. “It really came together in a way different from other events.”

Kim Gilmer, director of the Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation Department, was at the festival almost from start to finish, as was her staff. Before Saturday she had been working many more hours to get ready, and as the old saying goes, she loved seeing a plan come together.

“It was really fantastic,” Gilmer said. “It was what we were trying to do. Our goal when we started was to create the biggest event ever for Lake Oswego. There was something for everybody.”
